Women's Tennis Competes at Marlins Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's tennis team competed at the Marlins Invitational on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan University.

The Eagles competed in both singles and doubles against Southern Virginia while also going up against Virginia Wesleyan in singles competition.

Bridgewater picked up two singles win against SVU with several other matches closely contested. Bridgewater's Rachel Crawford defeated Audrey McBride 6-2, 6-2 to win at No. 3 while Ali Keister edged SVU's Leeanne Aldrich in split sets 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) to take the decision at the No. 5 flight.

The Eagles dropped two close matches in the top two flights. At No. 1, SVU's Morgan Blount slipped past Bridgewater's Whitney Kiser 6-4, 6-2 and at No. 2 Alyssa Sewell held off the Eagles' Nicole Shifflett in split sets. Sewell took a 6-0 win in the first set, but Shifflett evened the match, taking the second set, 6-4. Sewell claimed the tiebreaker 10-4 to win the match.

In doubles play, Kiser and Shifflett stopped Blount and Sewell 8-6 to win the No. 1 flight.

The Eagles won two of the seven singles matches played against Virginia Wesleyan. Crawford once again won at No. 3, taking down Anna Rogers 8-0. Malena Hoover picked up the win at No. 5 singles, 8-3, over Aubree Johnson.
