BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team beat Southern Virginia in three sets on Wednesday night. The win puts the Eagles at 17-4 overall and gives them their thirteenth sweep of the season.
Taylor McNeely started off set one with strong serving to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead. The team maintained a slim advantage until McNeely stepped back behind the service line again. She rattled off nine straight balls for a 20-12 lead. The dominant serving continued as Madison Haynes would end the set on an ace.
The teams stayed within a few points of each other at the start of the second. Bridgewater made hustle plays all throughout the set to keep the ball alive and break away for a 23-15 lead. Nadia Valle ended the set with two straight kills to give the Eagles a two set advantage.
Set three was competitive until the final points. It looked like it was going to go in the Knights favor as they held a 17-11 lead. That was until the Eagles found their stride and evened the match 19-19 thanks to kills from Rachel Gaston and Deja Booker. Ultimately, the Knights made too many errors as the Eagles would go on to take the set 25-23 and the match.
Gaston once again led the Eagle attackers with 15 kills putting her over 600 career kills. She also added 16 digs for her thirteenth double-double. Haynes was solid at the net, racking up seven kills and no errors. Emily Hanger stopped the Knight attackers recording four blocks, and McNeely led the back row defense with 17 digs. Victoria Wilson assisted on 35 balls.
Bridgewater returns to action Saturday, October 13, for a homecoming match against Shenandoah. The 1988 ODAC Championship team will be honored at the start of play. Game time is 11:00 a.m.
