BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team swept the visiting Shenandoah University Hornets on homecoming weekend. Prior to the match, the 1988 ODAC Champion Bridgewater College volleyball team was recognized.
The first set was the tightest as both teams came out ready to play. Neck-and-neck until 20 all, a Madison Haynes service run that featured kills from Lindsay Olzawski and Rachel Gaston gave the Eagles a 24-21 edge. Gaston would end the set on a kill.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead and maintained it for an 18-11 advantage in set two. They would hold steady and take the set on a Victoria Wilson kill to gain a two set lead heading into the third.
Bridgewater ran away with the third set as they hit a .444 compared to Shenandoah's -.208. The Hornets would end the set on three straight attack errors and give the Eagles the match.
Gaston had yet another big day with a match high 18 kills, her sixth straight game with double-digit kills. She also contributed 12 digs for another double-double. Haynes remained steady at the net, leading the team with a .500 hitting percentage. She committed only one attack error adding three blocks. Olzawski also added three blocks. Libero Taylor McNeely controlled the back line, picking up a match high 15 digs. Wilson continued to set the offense recording 42 assists.
The Eagles have now won 21 straight sets at home. They sit at 18-4 overall and 6-1 in the ODAC. The team returns to play Wednesday, October 17 for a 7 p.m. match on the road against Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets currently sit atop the ODAC with a 7-1 conference record.
